Surface Shape of Two-Dimensional Granular Piles

چکیده
We study the surface shape of two-dimensional piles using experiments and a continuum theory for surface flows of granular materials (the BCRE equations). We first obtain an analytical solution to the BCRE equations with a simple transformation and show that the surface shapes thereby predicted are in good agreement with the experimental results. By means of such an analytical solution, we find that the formation of the curved tails at the bottom of such piles depends not only on the properties of the granular materials but also on the drift velocity of the grains within the rolling layer.

Binary Mixtures of Two-Dimensional Granular Piles
Previous work on the maximum angle of stability of granular material piles had shown a dip pattern, with lower angles of stability for mixtures of hexagons and dimers or singles made out of ball bearings. This purpose of this study was to confirm this pattern for mixtures of different shapes, namely doubles and large diamonds and small and large triangles. This was done by recording footage of ...
متن کاملGranular elasticity: general considerations and the stress dip in sand piles.
Granular materials are predominantly plastic, incrementally nonlinear, preparation-dependent, and anisotropic under shear. Nevertheless, their static stress distribution is well accounted for, in the whole range up to the point of failure, by a judiciously tailored isotropic nonanalytic elasticity theory termed granular elasticity. The first purpose of this paper is to carefully expound this vi...
متن کاملSimulation of Granular Flows and Pile Formation in a Flat-Bottomed Hopper and Bin, and Experimental Verification
Granular flows of 200 μm particles and the pile formation in a flat-bottomed hopper and bin in the presence of air and in a vacuum were predicted based on three-dimensional numerically empirical constitutive relations using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics and Computational Fluid Dynamics methods. The constitutive relations for the strain rate independent stress have been obtained as the functio...
متن کاملAngle of Repose and Angle of Marginal Stability: Molecular Dynamics of Granular Particles
We present an implementation of realistic static friction in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of granular particles. In our model, to break contacts between two particles, one has to apply a finite amount of force, determined by the Coulomb criterion. Using a two dimensional model, we show that piles generated by avalanches have a finite angle of repose θR (finite slopes). Furthermore, these...
متن کاملAnimating Sand as a Surface Flow
This paper presents a new efficient method for animating sand and other granular materials in 3D scenes. Our method couples 2D and 3D simulation techniques in a physically based way. A surface flow model of granular material-the BCRE model-is used to separate sand piles into two layers: a surface flowing layer and a static layer. The surface layer is simulated using discrete element method (DEM...
